its a movie about a substitute teacher..I thought it might be interesting b/c of my prior experience as a substitute teacher ...but I after the first ten minutes I couldn't take it anymore ...with all due respect for the creators of this filmm,..I'm sureit has a redemptive purpose later in the story, but I couldn't. hang in there to see it..too much profnity & sexual falk & the use of stereotypes...I was hoping for something maybe light & humorous, but this was heavy from the start...even though it tried to cast it in a humorous vein...it starts at a highschoolclass reunion..a slim guy..supposed to look "nerdy" meets an old female classmate..they talk...he says he's a novelist..she keeps asking Q's..then he admits he lives with his mom & teaches school...at the same school he attended..he tries to ask her out...& she balks...then it cuts to the next day..he's in the classroom on a long-term assignment..a black kid named "Jamal" gives him trouble from the start...another black guy calls him "faggot" under his breath,..a third black guy says "he thinks we all look alike...he's racist.." at which point he objects & says "not racist, my people have been thru that..."..he's jewish, then somebody makes a jewish joke..he sends Jamal out..next scene in the lounge..the "sub" is talking to another teacher..who gasps when he says he sent Jamal out..as if Jamal is somebody to be afraid of ..next scene..the sub arrives home..his sister drops the "f bomb" (f--k) at him several times & bullies him, ..next scene; he's drinking & playing some kind of dice game with a bunch of pals, presumably Jewish..& they're talking about how nice some of the girls look at school....next scene back at the classroom..the sub is lecturing & jamal makes a "slit throat" gesture..& the sub"gulps".....and that's about the timeI walked out...the name of the movie itself is cliche "wuss"..from "wussy" meaning wimpy..etc, ..I assume the story will progress into the sub eventually taking charge& putting the bully students into their place..he will become a hero..I hope so anyways..I remember a movie called "the substitute" in which the sub actually cut off one of the fingers of a nefarious student...that was great..I empathize with the real-life subs such as this character,..trying to do just a decent job..not wanting trouble,,but kids being kids they can be assholes at times..fortunately, actually, in my own experience, the good times were better than the bad..but the few bad times always stand out in your memory because some kids can be REALLY BAD..& simply evil..& YES, anti-semitic...funny thing is I experienced anti-semitism even though I'm not Jewish..in fact I just experienced it at Blessed Sacrament church..where I went for evening mass just around the corner from the egyptian..after leaving the film early..you see , when I go to church I wear a jacket (ie a blazer)..I wear it because it is convenient & shows respect for others, but there's a segment of society, esp. around hollywood who has a stereotype fixed in their mind of anybody clean-cut ina. suit as being "Jewish"..its a lazy stereotype on their part, & self-serving, but I saw it coming as I dropped my check in the plate..the gruff guy carrying the offering basket went out of his way to say "Thank you"to me..but didn't do that w/ anybody else..he did it to say "I know you just want attention for giving offering & coming to church." He had his mind made up, & of course, he was Mr. Perfect..Mr. self-righteous....anyways, back to the movie...as I was saying, I assume the story will progress into a redemptive climax..I just couldn't hang on that long..I had enough painful experiences as a substitute..& don't like hearing the F word nor the kind of sexualized talk i heard...teachers talking about students..that NEVER REALLY HAPPENS..at least it didn't in my experience..and that makes teachers look bad & sleazy..and people make judgments & impressions based on such fiction..movies shape people's prejudice for better or worse. ..I felt like this one started out "for worse", including making the black kids the bad kids...
