4/12/11 WHY WE'RE STILL FIGHTING the CIVIL WAR (TIME MAG)

[note: I would say we are DEFINITELY still fighting the Civil War. Unfortunately, some blacks are angry at the wrong people, including those with ancestors who fought for the north (as mine did). In an article below (re "myths") it says the north didn't originally enter into the Civil War specifically to set slaves free, but I find iit hard to believe it wasn't embedded in the consciences of the northern people. The north wanted to keep the union together and represented freedom. The slaves knew that if they could get to a "free state" they would be free (in most cases). The north was ALL ABOUT freedom, so it hurts me when some blacks blame ALL whites for the historical injustices, when at least one of my ancestors died of war-related illness (pneumonia), God bless him. He knew what he was fighting for...for the unity of the Union, & for freedom for ALL, among other things. Those who take pride in the accomplishments of their ancestors carry on their idealism, as do I.
